Title: OCCURRENCE OF PLASMODIUM SPP. AND HAEMOPROTEUS SPP. IN WILD AND DOMESTIC BIRDS IN THE STATE OF PIAUÍ.

Abstract: Avian hemosporidia infections, especially Haemoproteus spp. and Plasmodium spp are considered important factors of population decline and species extinction, studies

of these infections in birds can lead to the understanding of relationships between parasites, hosts and environment. Brazil has the largest avifauna in the world and several studies were carried out in the country to understand ecological and epidemiological factors of these infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of hemosporidia in birds in the State of Piauí. Birds were captured in the following municipalities in the state: Água Branca, Amarante, Lagoa Alegre, Parnaíba, Piripirí and Teresina. Captures were performed using fog net and pulsar; The birds were morphometrically evaluated and blood was collected for hematological evaluation and samples for molecular analysis. Hemosporidia were detected in 6.71% (51/371) in the light microscopy evaluation and 24.4% (24/102) in the molecular evaluation. The Polymerase Chain Reaction was more efficient than microscopy in detecting hemosporiodes by the chi-square test (P≤0.05). The infection was reported for the first time in five hosts: Certhiaxis cinnamomeus (Curutié), Agelaioides fringillarius (Pale Tile Wing), Furnarius figulos (Leather Coat in the Mud), Calidris minutilla (Maçariquinho) and Conirostrum bicolor (Figuinha do Mangue). The results demonstrate that infections by hemosporidia occur in birds from the State of Piauí, the molecular diagnosis is more efficient than the microscopic diagnosis in these infections and new hosts participate in the cycle of these infections in the state.
